Body Temperature and Depression: A Surprising Connection

A large-scale study of 20,880 participants revealed a link between higher daytime body temperature and more severe depressive symptoms, with sensor data indicating that for each unit increase in depression severity, body temperature rose by 0.06°C.

The Study at a Glance

Conducted over seven months, this research analyzed data from the TemPredict Study, including 112,649 days of wearable sensor data and self-reported health assessments.

Participants provided 51,717 self-reported depression scores using the PHQ-8 scale, a standard measure of depression severity.

Each 1°C increase in self-reported body temperature correlated with a 0.29-unit increase in depression severity on the PHQ-8 scale.

Sensor-measured body temperature followed a similar trend, with each 0.1°C rise linked to a 0.06-unit increase in depressive symptoms.

How Temperature and Depression Connect

People with higher daytime body temperatures showed more severe depressive symptoms, suggesting a link between thermal regulation and mood disorders.

The difference between awake and asleep body temperature, known as diurnal temperature variation, was lower in individuals with higher depression scores.

These findings hint at circadian rhythm disruptions, a factor already associated with mood disorders.

Future Implications

With depression affecting over 280 million people worldwide, understanding biological factors like body temperature regulation could open new treatment possibilities. If further studies confirm these findings, temperature-based interventions, such as controlled heat exposure or medications targeting thermoregulation, may revolutionize depression treatment.
